    HIV/AIDS

There is no community that has felt the pain of the HIV/AIDS epidemic more than our community. In the 1980’s a critical mass of the LGBTQ community was wiped out as HIV/AIDS took hold over the world.

While treatment has progressed a long way, there is still work to be done. That is why Log Cabin Republicans is excited to support President Trump’s initiative to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030. Our community has suffered long enough, and strong political leadership from the White House will allow for us to end the spread of this deadly virus. While Log Cabin Republicans has been integral in the HIV/AIDS research and education movement for decades, we join this Administration supporting policies of:

    • High availability for preventative medications such as PrEP.
    • High availability of testing for at-risk communities.
    • Aggressive treatment for those suffering from HIV/AIDS.
    • Subsidies for HIV/AIDS-related medications and treatment.

    Second Amendment

Despite the great strides in freedom the LGBT community has earned in American society, we are still a widely-targeted group. According to the FBI, nearly 20 percent of hate crimes were aimed at LGBT people.

As LGBT people, we know there are some who seek to harm us.

As Republicans, we refuse to lay down and be victims.

As Americans, we know that the best way to defend ourselves is with our Constitutionally-guaranteed right to keep and bear arms. Knowing this, we at Log Cabin Republicans support:

    • Protecting the Second Amendment in its entirety.
    • Expanding Second Amendment rights to allow concealed carry in every state.

From the shooting at Pulse nightclub to violent attacks on the street, LGBT people are in danger, but we know that when the Second Amendment is supported and protected – so are we.

    Conversion Therapy

We at Log Cabin Republicans know that being a member of the LGTBQ community is something that should be celebrated – not shunned. While we believe that every adult has the intrinsic right to pursue their own happiness, in no way do we condone or recommend conversion therapy. Centered both in science and ethical reasoning, we support:

    • A nationwide ban on conversion therapy for anyone under the age of 18.

As the party of liberty, it is not our goal to tell an adult what they can or can not do; however, studies of the effects of conversion therapy have concluded that the impact of conversion therapy is often harmful, both psychologically and physically. For children, the negative impact is most severe, leading to long-term problems, up to and including suicide. We condemn the use of conversion therapy and advocate for state and federal legislation that ends its use.

    Adoption

As Republicans and conservatives, we recognize the importance of the family and maintaining strong family values – but those values include our families too. With the knowledge that the American foster care and adoption systems are inundated with more children than there are willing families, we find it abhorrent that several states have attempted to make it illegal for LGBT couples to adopt or foster children. LGBT couples make parents as qualified and loving as straight families, because of this we support:

    • Legal protections ensuring that LGBT couples may adopt or provide foster care in any program sponsored by federal, state, and local governments.
    • Legal protections ensuring that governments do not discriminate against adoption or foster care services that include LGBT couples.

For both equality and opportunities for children to have a better life, Log Cabin Republicans supports legislation to include our families in the Republican party.

    Decriminalization

While the LGBT-rights movement has moved quickly over the last few decades in America, Log Cabin Republicans understand the unique role of American leadership for equality movements abroad. In 68 countries, being gay is criminalized, and in 9 of them, the punishment is death. With much work to be done for LGBT people everywhere, Log Cabin Republicans support:

    • International decriminalization of homosexuality.
    • International decriminalization of gender identity/expression for trans people.
    • Eradication of the death penalty as a means of punishment for LGBT people.
    • Sanctions against any country which, to any extent, criminalizes LGBT people.
    • Recognition, in the granting of requests for asylum, of the plight of LGBT people who are persecuted and threatened with execution.

At Log Cabin Republicans, we know that the world succeeds when the United States is at the helm of the international stage. Therefore, we believe in a confident foreign policy and a strong national defense.  As the world’s sole military superpower, it is vital that the United States remain ready and able to shoulder its responsibilities in the global arena while standing as a beacon of freedom.

    ECONOMY & TAXES

As members of the LGBT community, we strive toward our goals of expanded opportunities and fair treatment.

As Republicans, we know the best way to achieve both of these goals is through a strong economy that benefits all Americans.

When the national economy is thriving, people in the LGBT community are thriving, too. As business owners, professionals, and successful members of our communities, LGBT people benefit as much as anyone from cuts to burdensome regulation and hefty taxes. Knowing that a strong economy is a single-best way to expand opportunity we support:

    • Lowering taxes across the board.
    • Slashing regulation, particularly on small businesses.
    • Expanding economic opportunity.

We know that there is no better way to improve the lives of LGBT people than by giving them more freedom over their checkbooks and their lives. When taxes are cut, LGBT people have more resources to pursue their goals and achieve a better quality of life. When regulations are slashed, it enables LGBT people of all backgrounds to pursue upward mobility by starting and growing a small business, investing and putting money back into their communities. When we cut both taxes and regulations, LGBT people have unbridled economic opportunity.

    Fairness For All

As Republicans, we understand that all people are created equal. While our values matter and should be protected, we understand that our values and rights should never supersede the rights of others. That is why we at Log Cabin Republicans support the Fairness for All Act. This act, co-sponsored by many of our Republican allies in Congress, enacts:

    • Legislative protection for LGBTQ people in the workplace, ensuring that no one can be fired on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
    • Protections for religious liberties, helping to find a balance between fairness, equality, and individual liberty.
    • Additions to existing civil rights, anti-bullying, and housing bills to include both sexual orientation and gender identity as legally protected groups.

This bill suggests a new direction in the Republican party that artfully balances liberty with inclusion. We fully support the Fairness for All Act.

    Issues

For almost 50 years, Log Cabin Republicans has been on the front lines of the most important battles for LGBT civil rights at every level of government. In coordination with state and local governments, our chapters work at the grassroots to build and expand a more inclusive Republican Party. More than this, our headquarters in Washington, D.C. works to ensure conservative LGBT voices are heard in policy issues ranging from healthcare to foreign affairs in our nation’s capital.

In the early 1990’s, we opposed the Clinton Administration’s policy of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) with a three-front strategy – lobbying for repeal in Congress, consulting with the Department of Defense, and filing a suit in federal court. In the LCR case, the Ninth Circuit Court ruled on September 9, 2010 that the policy violated both the First and Fifth Amendments of the Constitution. That December, legislation to repeal DADT was enacted with Log Cabin Republican’s support, leading to a certification by the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff that repeal would not harm military readiness. That certification set the end of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell for September 2011.

More recently, we worked with the Trump Administration to recommend to the FDA to reduce the waiting period for gay men to donate blood, slashing the restriction waiting period and putting in place a timeline for its elimination completely.

While we have earned many political and policy victories, there is still more work to be done.

Based on our Republican principles, we support

    • Limited government
    • A strong national defense
    • A foreign policy reflective of our American values
    • Low taxes and less burdensome regulation
    • Personal responsibility and protected individual liberty
